My name is Hazel Puchalsky and I am a junior at Strath Haven High School. My favorite subject history, which I believe is essential to making informed decisions. Outside of the classroom I enjoy running, acting, and singing. I am involved in two choral groups, the school musical, yearbook, Bandfront, and Cross Country here at the high school. When I am not in school I like to spend time with my friends and siblings. My goal for this portfolio is to gain a better understanding of human geography and how it affects the everyday lives of people across the world.
What is Human Geography? Human Geography is the study of where and why people live where they do. This study looks at the effects of humans on their environment, and vice versa. Human Geography is important because the place where one lives affects every part of their life from their social status to cultural norms to what they eat.
What is Cartography? Cartography is the science of mapmaking. Even though most people no longer use paper maps, cartography is still as important as ever. This is because many people rely on GPS. Cartography is also important in understanding things like natural disasters, which are becoming more frequent, or why one area suffers food shortages. With the modern cartogrpahy of GIS, researchers can easily combine information onto maps, leading to new discoveries with cartography.
